My Way of Staying

I didn’t know her name when I got here. May Rindge. The Queen of Malibu.

She owned this coast once. She lost her husband. And then the state, the county and the railroad came for it. She fought every one of them. She lost the land. She never left it, and now we have PCH.

I think about her often when I am walking the stairs at Big Dume. Same water, same light and one hundred years apart.

She wanted to keep this place wild, and I wanted to find home.

That’s The Rising Sun to me. The sun rises. It sets. Then it rises again.

May lost what she fought for, and the coast and the magic of Malibu remained. I’ve started over more times than I can count.
